Parliamentary Committee on National Security refuses to attend GHQ briefing

According to sources, the Parliamentary Committee on National Security has refused to attend a briefing on the security situation and US-Pakistan relations at the General Headquarters (GHQ).

The committees include the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, Senate Standing Committee on Defence and the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Raza Rabbani said the members had decided not to attend the briefing. The committee chairman also said that the regulations did not allow the committee to hold meetings outside Parliament House.

Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lieutenant General Ahmed Shuja Pasha were supposed to brief three committees today, October 11, 2011.

In addition, Parliamentary committee on Defence and Production will also be briefed on defence-related matters on Thursday, October 13, 2011. According to sources, Chairman Senate Defence Committee Lt. Gen (R) Javed Ashraf Qazi said that the national security agency had already given them briefing on the national security matters while Pakistan Army would apprise them about military related aspect at the meeting being held on October 13.

He further said during 2010, Pakistan Army had arranged a similar briefing and the Parliamentary bodies were given detailed view on various defence matters and the upcoming meeting is in related to that.

Answering a question he said Pakistan Air Force being part of the campaign against terrorism had recently briefed them on the matters concerning to them.
