Capital Development Authority CDA to remove illegal road barriers in Islamabad

After receiving complaints from the residents living in different sectors of the Federal Capital Islamabad regarding the erection of numerous road blocks in the name of security, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has finally launched a survey to evaluate the ground realities and remove unwanted and illegal barriers that have been causing problems for the public.

According to sources, most of these barriers have been established by Diplomatic missions, private schools and private companies.

It has been learned from reliable sources that most barriers in posh sectors and Diplomatic enclaves have been erected without the permission of CDA, which is a direct violation of law as prior permission from CDA is mandatory before installing any infrastructure in the capital city.

Speaking on the matter, the Director Municipal Administration Mansoor Ali Khan told Pakistan’s leading English newspaper “The News” that he himself while conducting a survey had identified 157 places in Diplomatic Enclave where barriers were installed.

“We are also completing a report about barriers raised by foreign missions in Diplomatic Enclaves and located at other places and it will be sent to foreign missions so that the matter could be taken up at some appropriate forum,” said Khan.

It was also revealed by the Director Municipal Administration that the civic body had removed some barriers installed by the city’s most elite schools to reduce the problems of the people living in the neighbourhood.

“We have been receiving lot of complaints from residents of different sectors who were upset over self-created security measures without taking CDA or Islamabad Police into confidence.” Khan added.

However, he clarified that no action would be taken which would undermine the security of these sensitive locations as there is always a possibility of a terrorist attack on schools and foreign missions.

Since July, 2007 Pakistan has seen a barrage of suicide bombings after the Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) operation which placed the Federal Capital as a prime target for militant groups to avenge the operation on the mosque which according to government officials resulted in 154 deaths, while 50 militants were captured by the Pakistan Army.

On September 20, 2008  the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad was targeted by a suicide bomber when he hit an explosive laden truck in front of the famous hotel triggering an explosion that left a 60 ft (20 m) wide, 20 ft (6 m) deep crater outside the hotel.

This was one of the deadliest attacks in Islamabad after which the government and private companies initiated a security protocol which resulted in the erection of barriers to restrict the movement of suspicious vehicles.

However, things are gradually returning to normal as the city has seen a rapid decrease in terrorist activities after the Pakistan military launched an offensive in the North of the country against militant groups.

The extensive barriers had barricaded different sectors which caused problems for commuters due to which the CDA has decided to take appropriate action to facilitate the people.
