Increasing traffic creates immense problems in Lahore – Part 1

Traffic problem in Lahore has become a major issue at the moment and it is getting even worst with every passing day. Numerous reasons are there which are accelerating the intensity of this problem. With the mounting population of Lahore, the vehicles have also increased to an incalculable number causing a mess of traffic jam in almost every hour of the day.

Among the various reasons of traffic problems in Lahore, a few are; lack of proper system, bad quality of roads, lack of proper transportation system, violation of traffic rules, negligence of traffic wardens, using mobile phones while driving, parking on the main roads and construction of commercial buildings at the main and busy roads.

Besides these reasons, there are certain other elements which also play a vital role in creating this problem. Among these elements, the important one is the lack of awareness among people about the traffic rules, which are made for their safety.

With every passing day, one can observe the addition of a huge number of vehicles on the roads of the city. This increased number of vehicles creates traffic jam on signals of the main roads, particularly in the morning, when people leave for their offices and students leave for their schools and colleges.

The same situation happens again when schools and colleges close at afternoon and the roads present a picture of mess. Traffic wardens fail to control this mess which has become a headache for people.

Besides this, the traffic system of Lahore requires certain changes which are quite essential to resolve the issue in a proper way. This system is not working well at the moment as it has failed to resolve the traffic problems. It needs certain improvements in different aspects to resolve the problem in an effective way.

To tackle this problem, government should build underpasses and overhead bridges on the main locations of the city. The roads should be widened to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles. The condition of the roads should also be improved so that people could go smoothly without having a sudden accident.

One of the most important steps to solve this issue is to give awareness to people, which will make them realize the importance of abiding by the traffic rules. The traffic wardens should behave in a more polite way and deal things with better understanding. The traffic rules should be implemented strictly and those who violate these rules should be given punishment and their driving licenses should be cancelled on immediate basis.

The crux of the matter is that government and civil society need to join forces to deal with this problem. People should cooperate with the government by following the traffic rules. They should present themselves as the responsible citizens of the country.

Without the coordination of government and civil society, the traffic problems in Lahore city cannot be resolved. Karachi, a metropolitan city in the country clearly shows the woes which are faced by the people while commuting. Despite the extra-ordinary flow of traffic in the city, many steps have been taken by the local authorities to curb the flow of traffic on important avenues. Lahore should take example and try to implement such measure which can ensure better traffic and safe travel for the community as a whole.
