Pakistan’s Film Industry – Revived?

Pakistan film industry is a sinking ship and this fact is not hidden from anyone. Producers are consistently producing movies that are focused for a particular group of people. Punjabi movies are targeted for the crowd of villages and backward areas who watch them just for fun and time pass. The unmatched dismal story-making of lolly-wood will further destroy our young generation.

The well-known so called icons of Pakistani film industry Mr. Syed Noor and Ms. Sangeeta would be very proud of their productions but sadly they have been unable to attract sizeable audience to the cinemas because they haven’t addressed the social, political or religious issues in any of their movies.

It seems like the fictional love stories are the only chapter that is left to be discussed in Pakistan; at least that is what portrayed in our Punjabi movies. The semi-naked songs and some inherited dialogues and ideas from our neighbouring nation are the essence of our films. They are not related to the real-life issues of Pakistan at all and are totally based on some alien love life experience that is absolutely fictitious.

Shoaib Mansoor, a man who can be called the saviour of Pakistani film industry has come up with two good productions. He has exposed the issues that a layman in Pakistan comes across in his mundane routine.

Pakistan’s religious conservatives have never criticized the vulgarity in Punjabi movies but stood up against the producer who exposed reality. Such double standards from everyone everywhere in Pakistan has pushed us to where we stand today; a state of despair.

“Khuda Ke liye” was a super doper hit and it was followed by another mega hit this year “BOL”. Both movies depicted different aspects of Pakistanis life. The plot or idea was not copied from anywhere and were produced to address social issues; intentions to bring families to the cinemas and promote two different ideas that are the root-cause of social wars between different groups in Pakistan.

There is a need for such producers who can boldly portray the social issues of our country. The first step has been taken by Shoaib Mansoor which should be backed by some young producer; the time is near when people would regularly visit cinemas to watch Pakistani movies; it just needs to change the mind set of producers. Let’s hope that this turnaround is long-lived and Shoaib Mansoor’s efforts to bring a change in the film making industry will not go in vain.
