Eliminate Haqqani safe heavens on your side of border, Hillary Clinton asks Pakistan
US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has asked Pakistan civil and military establishment to act efficiently to eliminate Haqqani militants on its side of the Afghanistan border.
On Thursday, October 20, 2011, Hillary is due to reach Pakistan, where she is expected to meet Pakistan’s civil and military leadership, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar.
The prime objective of Hillary’s visit is to cut down the ongoing tension between the two close allies on war against terrorism.
The stress mounted up when senior American officials accused Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency of using Haqqani network as a tool to fire up a proxy war in Afghanistan.
The US secretary of state, who will be accompanied by CIA chief David Petraeus and top US military officer Martin Dempsey on trip to Pakistan, paid a short visit to Afghanistan, where she talked to media at a joint news conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Hillary described that a major operation is under way against Haqqani network in eastern Afghanistan, adding that the time has come for Pakistan to take initiative and destroy militants’ safe heavens on its side of the Pak-Afghan border.
“We are taking action against the Haqqanis. There was a major military operation inside Afghanistan in recent days. And now it’s a question as to how much cooperation Pakistanis will provide in going after those safe havens,” said Hillary while talking to media persons.
According to US intelligence agencies, the Haqqani network is very active in Afghanistan these days. Along with many other accusations, the American government recently blamed Haddanis for a bomb attack on Nato outpost that injured 77 Americans.
Hillary confirmed that US agencies have authenticate proofs of Haqqani network’s presence in Pakistan, saying that the US administration is intended to push Pakistan to go for a serious operation against the militants in North Waziristan.
“We intend to push the Pakistanis very hard as to what they are willing and able to do with us…to remove the safe havens and the continuing threats across the border to Afghans,” added Mrs Clinton who is the 67th US Secretary of State.
