Gillani cautions the rivals against any extra-constitutional steps

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani advised his political rivals to patiently await the next elections should they want any change. In a brief encounter with the reporters on Wednesday, October 19, the premier dismissed any speculation pertaining to the change
of the government.

He went a step ahead and warned the opponents against using any extra-constitutional steps or quasi-parliamentary means to oust the current government. Appealing to the opposition parties to show maturity, he advised them not to repeat the politics of fateful
90s.

“People would not accept any extra-constitutional or quasi-parliamentary step to unsettle the democratic dispensation because they do not want a repetition of the politics of the 80s and 90s,” Yousuf Raza Gillani said.

Gillani’s remarks came at a time when Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) has upped the ante against the federal government. Only on Tuesday did the party announce its ‘Go Zardari Go’ campaign, essentially aimed at ousting the PPP government.

He also implicitly referred to the statements of the leader of unification bloc in Punjab Assembly, Dr. Tahir Javed, who had earlier this month called for dissolution of Punjab assembly to bar the senate elections scheduled for March 2012.

He continued and asserted: “The government is strong and stable and by-elections would be held for vacant seats if the opposition resigned from the assemblies.”

The premier also referred to his meeting held with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s delegation which announced complete support for the PPP-led government in the centre, and – being in an ally, in Sindh as well.

Acknowledging the efforts of the MQM chief Altaf Hussain in bringing about peace in the volatile Karachi, he thanked him for the cooperation that is being extended for maintaining the law and order situation in the city.

Prime minister also referred to other important issues including the meeting with the United States Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. He said the talks between the two countries shall be held on the basis of sovereign equality.

All the same, the premier said, any trade with its neighbouring country India will be carried out after considering the national interest.
