Haqqani believes finding of common ground in Afghanistan will benefit Pakistan as well as America

Hussain Haqqani, the Pakistani ambassador to Washington has recently commented on the Afghanistan issue by saying that both Pakistan as well as America will benefit from a stable situation in Afghanistan but both the countries need to realize the importance of finding common grounds in the matter and not side lining the political ground realities in Pakistan as well as Afghanistan.

Haqqani expressed himself in this manner while giving a lecture at the University of California, Berkeley.

In Haqqani’s own words: “Afghanistan has its own history and its future could best be led and shaped by the people of Afghanistan.”

According to the ambassador, the best possible way to handle the situation in Afghanistan is to adopt a process of reconciliation that would pave the way for peace and harmony. He also added that it would be in the best interest of America to reach reconciliation in Afghanistan. Not only that, the U.S. will gain the most out of a peaceful process of negotiations and talks with Afghanistan as the best way to deal with the religious groups in that region is reconciliation.

While talking about Afghanistan and the peace process in that region with the collaborative effort of America as well as Pakistan, Haqqani also touched upon the Pakistan and U.S. relations. The ambassador acknowledged the fact that there are tensions between Pakistan as well as America but the problems are not of that level that cannot be resolved. Therefore, an optimistic approach would best serve both countries and a lack of talks and peaceful confrontation of problems between the two sides might lead to an aggravated situation that both Pakistan as well as America would not want to face at this critical point in time.

While touching on the Pakistan U.S. relations, Haqqani also explained the current political situation of Pakistan and the stand point of the Pakistani government on various important matters. Haqqani explained that the government of Pakistan that has been democratically elected is committed towards the fight against terrorism. However, there are restraints of both political as well as social nature that might slow the process down.
