US might attack North Waziristan, but they will think 10 times before assaulting, says Kayani

Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani stressed that US might attack North Waziristan, but they will think 10 times before assaulting our homeland.

He said so to parliamentarians at a briefing on Tuesday, where the Army Chief did not exclude the probability of US attacks, but claimed that Washington will now think countless times before initiating such an attack.

“They [the US] might do it but they will have to think ten times because Pakistan is not Iraq or Afghanistan,” said Kayani.

US is putting constant pressure on Pakistani Government to commence an operation in Waziristan. While referring to that Kayani added, “We have made it clear to the US that we will decide the timing of any such action according to our situation and capabilities. We have also told them that the problem lies within Afghanistan. If anyone convinces me that everything will be sorted out if we act in North Waziristan, I will take immediate action.”

Kayani’s declaration came long after the announcement of Afghan Defence administrators, who articulated that they have launched a new operation in collaboration with their NATO supporters. Afghan Chief of Army, Sher Mohammad Karimi said that the operation is called as “Knife Edge” and the purpose of the manoeuvre is to stop terrorist activities of our common enemy, which has harmed both sides.

Kayani added that we have cleared our stance on Afghanistan in written form to the Obama Government and have asked them to do the same, but we are still waiting for them to intricate their viewpoint. He explained that Pakistan cannot afford to have unprotected boundaries on both eastern and western sides.

He illustrated that Pak Military is not relying on US aid. “We got only 25% of the aid from the Kerry-Lugar Act. Pakistan Army has no objection if the US converts its military aid into civilian assistance,” Kayani added.

Furthermore, while pointing towards the responsibilities of Civilian, Army Chief said that military is only responsible for maintaining law and order in areas where it operates thus, civilians must realise their responsibility to maintain peace in country.
