Child labour in Pakistan

Child labour is a global issue but it has become more intense in Pakistan as more than 10 million children aged five to sixteen are engaged in this abuse. The number of children who are forced to work is increasing with an incredible pace as the growing unemployment and lack of resources are one of the basic reasons which is contributing in the aggravation of this social problem.

It has become a common practice throughout the country that children, who are living below the poverty line, are forced by their parents to work on different workshops, hotels, restaurants, hawkers many other laborious activities. Doing labour jobs in an early age destroy their personality and keep them away from education and consequently they are deprived from a good future.

Many reasons are there that have become the reason of growing number of children working in different places throughout Pakistan. Among these problems, comes the poverty and lack of resources which force parents to send their children on different workshops or other places to earn money in order to survive.

Lack of parental education is another big reason which causes children to go out and work for earning a livelihood for their families. These children earn approximately 100 to 300 rupees a day and help their families to keep their life going.

The most pathetic picture of the situation is that these children are completely unaware about the damage they are doing to themselves or their parents are doing to them. The government has made laws in this regard and it is considered a crime but unfortunately this practice if going on without paying any attention to the law. Nobody in the state machinery even bothers that how much talent is going into waste at the moment and how many children do not even enter in a school to have at least basic education.

Government of Pakistan should immediately take rapid steps to eliminate this problem which is damaging the personality of innocent people and which is keeping them away from getting education and from becoming responsible citizens of this country. These children should be provided with everything they deserve to become a good citizen. The violators of the law, who are employing children to run their business, should be punished with iron hands.
