Mudhouse & the Golden Doll: Pakistan’s reply to the Children of Heaven

One of the most diverse feature films to come out from the Pakistani film industry in recent years. Hamza Ali Abbasi’s debut venture, “Mudhouse and the Golden Doll” has all the recipes to become a heart-moving sensation.

Primarily featuring novice actors, the ninety minute showpiece is a labour of love from one of Islamabad’s most prolific stage performers.

Hamza Ali Abbasi makes his bow on the big screen accompanied by the likes of Mehwish Hayat, Tajwar Raza, Ottoman Ali Khan and Hamza Akhtar.

The storyline is far from the usual scripts we’ve come to expect from Lollywood and instead of vividly portraying damsels in distress, it focuses on social issues which most directors have come to ignore.

A demented local “crazy man” (Ali Abbasi) earns the trust of a little girl (Tajwar Raza) and the plot dramatically revolves around how the villager’s react to their bonding. Scenes have been shot in and around Islamabad but the creativity in shooting is such that one hardly recognises the locations.

Also boasting action in its running time, the movie has garnered ravenous reviews from everyone who has had the privilege of enjoying it. A great blend of heart moving scenes are well complemented by the adrenaline rush when the antagonist engages in a pursuit from the police.

All in all, the movie looks like a well-executed deviation from the falling standards of Pakistani cinema and given the current scenario in Pakistan, a different type of culture needs to be developed and work of arts such as this, will definitely contribute to that.

Having already been shipped to the Sundance Film Festival in the US the stage is set for the film to make its impact on the International arena. However Hamza Ali Abbasi isn’t resting on his laurels and is aiming even further.

Plans are in the pipeline to take the whole cast and crew to Abu Dhabi Film Festival in the future, so that they can experience what it’s truly like to be celebrity.

Complete with youthful exuberance and teenage pranks, MGHD has a nostalgic touch to it and you can feel that it’s destined for success at one place or another.
