(Part 1)

Ignorance is often regarded as bliss, for the burden of truth is too heavy to bear at times. While the mind is free from our clutches and dares to comprehend the reality of things, the enslaved heart is committed to keeping us in a fool’s paradise.

However, it is time for us to open our eyes to bitter reality. Pakistan is sitting on a time-bomb and it is only a matter of time before the country is blown up into pieces. The acquisition of nuclear technology may have delayed the approaching doom, but it is not enough to keep the inevitable from happening.

When Pakistan, later renamed to Islamic Republic of Pakistan in the 1973 constitution, was created, it was widely speculated that the sun would set on it in a matter of decades, if not years. The lack of resources and quality leadership, not to mention an immediate Indo-Pak war over the Kashmir issue in 1948, was bound to keep Pakistan from setting a smooth sail. Such handicaps put the survival of the infant Muslim country in danger and led to the circulation of dates by which Pakistan was expected to meet its demise.

Much to the disappointment of those hoping to see a collapse, Pakistan managed to hold its own and successfully dealt with the challenges faced by it during its infancy. However, it anyone thought the storm would subside, they couldn’t have been more mistaken.

The going was only going to get tougher for the Muslim country while living in close proximity with a hostile neighbour, India. The menacing neighbour had never embraced the existence of Pakistan whole-heartedly and was intent on asserting their dominance over the Muslim state. This pursuit of dominance is the main driving force behind the Kashmir-conflict as well, which exists mainly because of the strategic significance of the disputed region. Both the countries are well aware of the importance of Kashmir in gaining a substantial dominant position, which has led to a deadlock as – quite understandably – neither of the country is willing to compromise.

While the Pakistani nation has often been accused of dwelling in paranoia – blaming all the misfortunes that befall it on India – the negative vibes from the not-so-friendly neighbour are difficult to ignore. If celebrating the first birthday with war over Kashmir was not enough to send a clear message, then the 1965 and 1971 wars definitely did the trick. While the two countries never took arms against each other again after the 1971 war – which ended with a humiliating defeat for Pakistan – an era of mind games begun.

This new form of war was fought between the two countries using the most reliable weapon in their arsenal: intelligence agencies. India handed over the responsibility of intimidating and harassing Pakistan to Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), while Pakistan entrusted the task of ensuring the country’s survival and security to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
