Iran to complete gas pipeline project as soon as possible – Pakistan oil and gas sector update

Pakistan is facing its worst energy crisis since its birth in 1947. The Provinces of Punjab and Sind have been hit hard by the continuing energy shortfalls as many of the production and manufacturing industries are closed down in the last five years. To overcome the electricity and energy shortages, the government of Pakistan has decided to import more gas from Iran in a bid to meet electricity needs of the country.

It was revealed on Sunday that Pakistan and Iran gas pipeline project will be completed soon to curb the existing energy crisis of Pakistan. Iran sees exporting more gas to Pakistan as a potential development of their economy. The Persian Empire is rich in natural gas resources and it is the second largest producer of natural gas after Russia. Iran also plans to export gas to Iran, India and its neighbouring countries through an efficient network of gas pipelines.

Iranian ambassador to Pakistan Mr Mashaallah Shakiri stated on Monday that a large section of Iran- Pakistan pipeline in Iran has been completed already to pump gas into Pakistan. He further added that the remaining works on the pipeline will be done with full force in order to complete the project in due time.

Addressing the president of Rawalpindi Chambers of Commerce and Industry Jawad Bhatti, Mr Shakiri concluded that Iran is fully aware of Pakistan’ energy needs as it has already provided a cheaper electricity plan to federal government of Pakistan to overcome the challenges. He stressed Iran has put in a lot of effort to enhance trading and business relationships with Pakistan.

“Iran keen to enhance bilateral trade with Pakistan and stressed that it is need of the hour to endorse trading activities between the two neighbouring countries”, he added.
Shakiri said Iran was eager to promote the bilateral trade with Pakistan and focused to establish direct relations between the business communities of both sides. “Iranian embassy will provide every possible facility to the Pakistani businessmen community in this regard”, he said.
