Water scarcity is going to affect Pakistan in the future if proper measures are not taken

According to the Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture, one in three people are already facing water shortages. Around 1.2 billion people, or almost one-fifth of the world’s population, live in areas of physical scarcity, while another 1.6 billion people, or almost one quarter of the world’s population, live in a developing country that lacks the necessary infrastructure to take water from rivers and aquifers (known as an economic water shortage).

The same threat is faced by Pakistani’s and experts at a conference said that Pakistan should be prepared the possible changes posed by global water shortages and climate change.

The issue is aggravated when on top of global water shortages, Pakistan is confronting poor water management system in the country and because of that severe water crises is being endured by the people.

The conference arranged by the Centre for Civic Education and Forum of Federations Germany talked about water governance in the federal capital, which is already facing the challenges of climate change.

The focus of the conference was to urge authorities to take water issue into serious consideration. Over the same note Mohammad Tahir Qureshi IUCN-Pakistan stressed for the creation of a National Water Policy with consultative process among all stakeholders.

In his speech, he also mentioned that the sea species and the habitat are disappearing at an alarming rate due to scarcity of fresh water.

He highlighted the factors which are contributing to destroy Pakistan’s sea life, as he mentioned the lack of Coastal Zone Management, sea intrusion due to diversion of river Indus water, urban and industrial pollution and most importantly the absence of community involvement and participation in planning and implementation of a developing program.

Pakistan on the other hand has a less centralized water system, which almost every time leads to disputes among the Federal government and federating units.

It is high time that Pakistan should take this issue seriously, but it’s not that the government hasn’t spent money to solve the problem.  They have spent billions of money in the establishment of infrastructure of water since the last 60 years, but it has failed to manage that infrastructure properly.
