Corruption, stereotyping and the unsung heroes of Pakistan

There was this joke I once heard of a delegate who had come from Saudi Arabia to visit Pakistan. Upon his return to his homeland the people asked him what he had seen on his trip, to which he replied, ‘I have seen a miracle of God’.

Confused the people asked him what he meant by that statement and he replied; ‘only a miracle from God can explain how that country has not fallen to pieces and is still running.’

To add some context, this joke had been passed around when corruption was at its peak in the country and whether it is at that state again or not, the reputation of the government and its institutions certainly do not paint a very clear and trustworthy picture.

With that in mind, as well as the antics of the current regime, let us now look at the situation in the country. It seems that for the past few years everything has become more expensive with prices either fluctuating or increasing exponentially.

Sugar, gas and electricity are just a few commodities, or rather necessities, that this country has seen shortages in. One would have reason for hope and optimism if the people in charge did not have such vile and tarnished reputations.

Let us be honest, how many people would lay their trust in the hands of a person dubbed “Mr. 10%” (or was is 5%? I forget it seems the rate seems to change every few months).

If there was stability at the top and a feeling of trust between the people and the government, these issues would not have taken such a toll on the general population. Instead the people feel used and abused and the stereotyping of every government institution being corrupt something everyone can understand and relate to.

Yet, generalisation is harsh because there are still those who are working God’s miracle in this country. In every institution there has to be that one person, or group of people, who still understand the meaning of duty, honour and responsibility.

If it was not for them, this country would have collapsed long ago. So let us take a moment to salute these faceless unsung heroes, wherever they may be, thank them and hope that one day it is then in the seats of power that matter and remember, just because they are not in the limelight does not mean they do not exist.
