Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan claims Pakistan media has full support of government

Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan has claimed that the current government has provided excellent facilities and freedom to the media in the country.

According to the parliamentarian, there is a lot of potential in Pakistan to prosper, but the country needs support from media. She stated, “Our media, government and society have great potential and positive change will prevail. Media has to play an objective role and we are trying to bridge the gaps between state and private media.”

Dr Firdous further added that the country’s image should be portrayed positively all over the world by the media. She claimed, “Our press consulates in different countries of the world are our real ambassadors for promoting positive image of the country.”

Pakistan has been fighting terrorism for a long time and the country has made many sacrifices until now in an attempt to eliminate the insurgents from the region.

This has hurt the country’s economy and the image badly. However, the media needs to make sure that the world sees us as a nation fighting terrorism rather than a nation encouraging terrorism.

Pakistani media was given real independence by former President Pervez Musharraf, who derailed the government of Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif in October, 1999.

However, the media played a crucial role in bringing back democracy in the country and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) came into power after the general elections in 2008.

Although the government has been unable to bring a change in the country, Dr Firdous still hopes for betterment in the future. She believes that terrorism has cost a lot to the country, but everything will be under control in the near future.

The member of National Assembly was also grieved at the death of former PPP chairman and First Lady Nusrat Bhutto.

Praising the role of Nusrat Bhutto, Dr Firdous said, “Her contribution for the restoration of democracy during dictatorial rule of Zia-ul-Haq was acknowledged by even opponents of the PPP.”

The ex-chairman of PPP had health issues since 1982 and finally passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2011. She was 82 years of age at the time of death and outlived three of her children including former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto.
