Shahrukh Khan’s Ra-One fails to surpass Salman Khan’s Bodyguard

Shahrukh Khan’s much awaited film Ra-One, which was released on this Diwali, on October 27, has failed to surpass the opening-day box office record of Salman Khan’s big hit bodyguard.

Ra-One, which is the largest release of any Bollywood movie, earned 18.4 crore on the box office on Wednesday, which lags Bodyguard’s profit of the Day-One, by three crores.

Sci-fi magnum opus, Ra-One, was released on 3500 screens, simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions in over 3,100 theatres. On the contrary, Bodyguard was released only in Hindi in, 750 theatres two months ago. Ra-One
generated about 15-16 crore from the Hindi version, while earned 2 and 2.5 crores from the Tamil and Telugu versions of the movie.

In terms of revenue generation, Bodyguard has been the first Bollywood film which earned 21.5 crore in a single day. The income crossed Salman’s last year’s super-hit Dabbangg, which earned 14.5 crore and 13.5 crore, collected
by Amir Khan’ 3 idiots, released in 2009.

On the second day of release on Thursday, Ra-One’s collection was more eye-catching with film raking in a whopping Rs 36 crore gross with a net of 25.10, which is the highest revenue generated by a movie, in a single day in Bollywood.

“The movie is sold out and it could touch the 25-crore mark, making it a historic day for Indian cinema," said a Delhi-based distributor Sanjay Ghai.

The film has earned around Rs 6.5 crore from the overseas market, which makes the total revenue 25 crore. The oversease market is topped by UK and USA, where the film gathered Rs 3 crore. In addition, the markets of UAE, Singapore
and Australia, are reported to collect Rs 1 crore, Rs 60 lacs and Rs 18.3 lacs respectively.

“All I can say is that this is the biggest-ever Diwali release. Thursday has seen a huge growth in occupancy in theatres over Wednesday, which could translate into the highest collection by a Bollywood film in a single day" said
group chief financial officer-India at Eros International, the film’s distributor.

The latest reports have revealed that Ra-One’s total collection has jumped up to Rs 43 crore, despite showing a slow start on October 28, due to festival of Bhaidooj in north India.
