Imprisonment of the ‘surnames’ in Pakistan

With the evolution of politics in the world, it is now a proven fact that democracy is the best form of government, especially after the amazing success west has achieved because of it. There are many flaws in this system, yet, with some reforms according
to different societies and cultures, it is still the only way forward for any nation or country in the modern world.

Democracy is not just a form of government or a method to run the affairs of the state, but it is the name of a behaviour and attitude. The irony of Pakistan is that its politicians have been shouting and craving for democracy since last 64 years. They often
blame the military dictators for their intervention in the politics. However, they seem to forget that it has always been the politicians, who have forced, welcomed and encouraged the dictators to intervene and throw away publicly elected governments, because
of various reasons.

It is a completely different debate that is the current form of democracy an ideal system for a country like Pakistan, where the literacy rate is extremely low.

Political parties play an absolutely crucial role for democracy to flourish and if they are sincere with the betterment of democracy, they must have democracy in their own parties. However, ironically or one should say unfortunately, the biggest champions
of democracy in Pakistan do not have democracy in their own parties.

The biggest dilemma of Pakistan and its people has been the fact that since last 40 years, this nation has been running after individuals and surnames like Bhuttos, Shareefs, Chaudhrys etc. If not them, then their children. What kind of a democracy is this,
in which there are dynasties in the parties?

However, the nation has failed to learn that they must get out of imprisonment of these surnames and one must promote merit and justice instead of the surname as the only criteria to have a wonderful political career. It is not only against the true spirit
of democracy but also against the fundamentals of Islam, which was the basic ideology behind the creation of Pakistan.

If Pakistan is to prosper and move in the right direction, its people must get rid of this psychology that any specific surname is going to make the difference. People living in mansions can never solve the issues of the poor. If Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was
a great leader, it does not naturally give his children a right to rule Pakistan for the coming decades.
