Pakistan acknowledges India’s support for United Nations Security Council bid

Pakistan made a very clear statement on Saturday, October 30. Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Abdullah Hussain Haroon spoke on behalf of the country when he thanked and acknowledged India’s support in Pakistan’s bid for a non-permanent membership
with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The news comes out of Karachi as the country joins the council with a successful vote count.

“Many of the countries that Pakistan had considered as friends were no longer friends of the country. But India supported us in becoming a non-permanent member of the 15-member Security Council and played a major role,” Pakistan’s Ambassador to the U.N.
Abdullah Hussain Haroon said.

Krygyzstan was an opponent against Pakistan in its bid for the membership and it was looking very tough for the country to win the bid. Fortunately, China came to the nation’s aid as India also, surprisingly, backed up their efforts.

Haroon talked about the proceedings of the event from the Karachi Airport as reporters hurled in for the official’s view on how things played out in the end. Pakistan won the bid, at the end of the day, with a 129 to 193 votes on support. Member States in
the General Assembly cast their vote in the ballot.

Pakistan will be replacing Lebanon in the Asian seat and it will serve a two-year term starting from January 1, 2012. Haroon made it clear that his nation was not bothered by the 55 votes that were cast against the nation by other members of the General
Assembly.

“I think we should not be discouraged by the reaction by some of the nations in the UN because I can say the world wants Pakistan to play a positive role in the global scenario,” he said.

Haroon spoke of the US led drone attacks in the Northern region of the country and he made it clear that he would approach the UN with the issue if the Government allowed him or ordered him to do so.

“But we should not be scared of these attacks,” he added.

The Security Council currently holds five permanent members with Veto power. That includes: China, Russia, Great Britain, France and the United States of America.
