Poverty – A Social Bane

Ian Robertson described poverty as, “The inability to maintain minimal standards of food, clothing, shelter and health care”. While, the World Bank classifies a person to be poor if he earns less than a dollar a day! – That would mean a majority of Pakistani
people.

Poverty is one of the major social problems of Pakistan, especially when most people have limited economic resources and their standard of living is low.  Poverty can cause other social problems like theft, bribe, corruption, adultery, lawlessness, injustice.
To eradicate the evils of society we have to fight with poverty. We can’t control theft by enrolling thousands of police men. Corruption and injustice can’t come to an end through tight legislation but by demolishing poverty.

A low level of domestic income for an individual results in lack of access to education, health care, and other communal facilities like sanitation, transportation and communication. In addition, the poverty of thought is one of the major forms of poverty.

To eradicate poverty in Pakistan we have to fight the causes and factors of poverty. Unless we settle these issues poverty will never end.  Ignorance is one of the important aspects of poverty. Lack of information or knowledge will result in not utilizing
time, money and effort. Instead, we will never broaden our horizons and will be left to limited knowledge and resources.

In this modern age of scientific revolution we are far behind in education and most importantly scientific education. Our literacy rate is less than fifty percent; female education rate is in a much deplorable and miserable state. We need to provide vocational
and technical training in order to eradicate not just poverty but also illiteracy.

Pakistan is mostly an agricultural society and this means of income is very common. However, an unfortunate dilemma is that people are not aware and thus end up not utilizing their resources (if they have any) to their maximum output. Providing various technologies
without proper guidance is useless, farmers need to provided and how to utilize this technology in order to get the maximum benefit. Also we should provide incentives for students to study the aggro-economic benefits and how to improve the current situation
of the agro-industry.

Although there are many more reasons and causes of poverty in Pakistan. In a nutshell, poverty can’t come to an end unless we share a large figure of our GDP with the education sector and unless we provide developmental projects to various technical staff.

If we don’t start working towards our progress now, we will leave a bleak future for our kids! Let us promise and walk towards the betterment of Pakistan and our future generations!
