We will “kill facebook” on November 5, says Anonymous

An anonymous group of hackers has threatened to shut down the most popular social networking website in the world, facebook on November 5, according to the news sources.

The group known as “Anonymous” has reportedly made an alliance with hackers around the globe to disconnect the website from the internet completely. An alliance of highly professional intruders has shown its effects last year in 2012, when they crashed down the Australian Government website to record their protest against Senator Stephen Conroy’s efforts to implement filtering laws.

Earlier this year, in July, Anonymous uploaded a Youtube video containing their plan to block the facebook on November 5 because of fraudulent activities of the owners.

In video, which now has been disabled, the group alleged facebook to illegally use the information of the users.

“Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world.” Said one of the intruders. They also vow to “kill Facebook.”

The group however declined the allegation stating that the group associated with the anonymous is pursuing the attack rather than anonymous itself. November 5 is a Guy Fawkes Day, the day the day that marks a man’s attempt to blow up the British House of Parliament in 1605. It is main reason to choose this day, said IT experts.

Anonymous unofficially uses Guy Fawkes as a anti-heroism as a symbolic mascot, by wearing the Guy Fawkes mask used in Alan Moore’s graphic novel V for Vendetta.

In his novel, Moore selected the mask for his lone character struggling against the government for rising inequalities.

Queensland Police has started their undercover operation against the hackers, quoted a popular news channel. One of the members Queensland’s fraud squad, Brian Hay, said hackers do not attempt such attacks without any concrete reason.

“I’d imagine they’ve gone in – they’ve defeated the security system, they’ve got access, they’re confident they can do it again and they’re not going to be found out.” says Brian Hay.

Anonymous should be taken seriously says Cyber crime expert Dr Adrian McCullagh. He showed concern that if they were successful, 10 per cent of the global population would be affected. Facebook currently has over 800 million users worldwide.
