Greek opposition mounts pressure on prime minister to quit his post as Greece threatens to default

Antonis Samaras, the leader of the opposition bloc in the Greek parliament has called on the prime minister to step down from his post due to his mishandling of the situation that has led to the Greek economic disaster. France
and Germany along with the rest of the European Union are waiting anxiously on the developments inside Greece as the euro zone looks to be in crisis.

The Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou had been told by France and Germany that they are ready to give aid to Greece to pull out of its economic troubles along with aid from IMF but Papandreou himself acted controversially
and came out and announced that he would hold a referendum in his country and his the Greek people as to whether or not their government should accept the money or not.

This action has created discontent amongst his own party members as well as the opposition camp in the Greek parliament which now threatens to derail the whole process. Under pressure from domestic opposition forces and regional
powers, Papandreou announced last night that his country would be ready to give up the idea of a referendum if the opposition agreed but now Samaras, the opposition leader is calling on Papandreou to quit taking advantage of the contentious situation in Greece.

Samaras stated in his recent address to the parliament in Greece, “Mr. Papandreou pretends that he didn’t understand what I told him. I called on him to resign. He set fires everywhere, and returned as if nothing happened. A return
to normality means elections within the next six weeks if possible.”

He added that Papandreou, “Nearly destroyed Europe and the euro and all this to claim that he wanted to blackmail us into accepting the loan arrangement, even though I had said it from the beginning that it was unavoidable.”
