Government trying to secure repatriation of Amir, Butt and Asif, says Rehman Malik

Interior Minister Rehman Malik has proclaimed that the government of Pakistan is looking into the cricket spot-fixing case to secure repatriation of the Pakistani triumvirate, Muhammad Amir, Salman Butt and Muhammad Asif.

The trio of Pakistani cricketers was proved guilty for being involved in a spot-fixing scam during the test match against England in August 2010.

Butt was announced a 30-month jail sentence from the London court, Asif was jailed for 12-months while Amir for six months. On top of that, the court has directed Butt to pay a fine of £30,937 for getting involved in illegal activities. Similarly, Asif and
Amir were told to pay a fine of £9,389 and £8120, respectively.

The government has ordered its High Commission in London to provide them with a full report on spot-fixing case while Malik briefed President Asif Ali Zardari on the scandal. “The high commissioner in London has been asked to submit a report,” said Malik.

He told that the government will form a commission to look into the matter and the cricketers will not be abandoned. “We cannot rule out the possibility of any of the convicted players being innocent,” Malik added.

On the other hand, Salman’s father Zulfikar Ali Butt defended his son by saying that, “If Salman’s involvement is proved and evidence is provided that he took money, I tell the nation that my son Salman and I are ready to be hanged publicly.”

Meanwhile, the 19-year-old Amir said, “The PCB never told me just how serious a offence it was to get into these sort of things. They didn’t educate me enough about anti-corruption laws.”

Nonetheless, the board rejected Amir’s accuse by expressing that they educate every athlete on corruption and its consequences in the international cricket.

“The PCB would like it known for the record that this claim is in total contradiction to the facts,” PCB said.

Furthermore, the President has asked Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to prepare a report, which will include recommendations to avoid happening of such events in future.
