UNDP Report places Pakistan in deep waters

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), recently released a report by the name of the Human Development Programme Report 2011 in which it is stated that Pakistan is one of the poor countries in the world.

More specifically, Pakistan has been characterized in the group of the multi dimensional countries that are classed as poor. As far as the human development rankings are concerned, Pakistan finds its place at the 147th number. Other countries
such as China, India, Bhutan as well as Sri Lanka find themselves better off then Pakistan as they are classed as the medium development countries.

With regarding women, the report made the following mention: “In South Asia, women lag behind men in each dimension of the GII, most notably in education, national parliamentary representation and labour force participation. Women in Arab states are affected
by unequal labour force participation (around half the global average) and low educational attainment.”

The report not only mentioned important development related statistics but it also shed light on the relationship between sustainable development and equity in the social setup. More specifically, if fairness and social justice is made easily available to
people along with easy as well as speedy access, the sustainability of a society significantly increases.

An index of the Human Development Report offers a good perspective at the micro level in the society. This index is known as the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). The index examines households and their access to basic facilities such as the access to
clean drinking water. Other than that, it also takes note of the access to cooking fuel along with health services. The MPI index also examines the availability of the basic household goods. All these and other measures when taken into account, provide a comprehensive
and authentic picture of the state of poverty a society is experiencing.

The country of Pakistan is experiencing various social as well as economic problems. It needs to recognise and take up responsibility of the state of affairs it is in so that the people of Pakistan are benefited in the future and do not live through a worst
state of affairs.
