Pakistan is taking to Kabaddi like never before, interest in sport growing

It may not be as passionately followed as cricket, neither does it have the kind of support that turns up whenever the national cricket team is playing, yet with the Kabaddi World Cup in full swing, it seems that an increasing number of Pakistanis are taking
to the sport.

Well, maybe not taking to it in the literal sense, but between the flipping through the many channels on the television set, one does pause for a moment and enjoy a bit of Kabaddi action.

There are many reasons for this; firstly, the Pakistan national team is playing and doing rather well in the tournament. Secondly, the action is so fast paced that one can easily lost themselves watching wave after wave of raiders and defenders ply their
trade.

Also the rules are fairly simple to pick up as well. One team sends a raider into the other teams half. It is the raider’s task to tag any one of the four opposing players and return to his own half. The opposing team has to prevent the raider from doing
so by grappling and wrestling them to the ground.

That is the basis of the gameplay and there are more technical rules, yet those are easy enough to pick up on their own as well.

Match commentary often has the ability to make or break a televised sporting program and the excited Punjabi commentators may annoy a few, yet in all honesty it only adds to the entertainment levels.

Let us be clear here, that does not mean we are slating the Kabaddi World Cup or making fun of the sport. It is genuinely enjoyable watching the matches, especially when one sees the likes of the United States, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom taking
part in the event with their teams.

In the end, the Kabaddi World Cup is an enjoyable spectacle. It is easy to get into and hard to break out of once the matches get into full flow. While it will not challenge cricket as Pakistan’s most watched sport, it is enjoying its five minutes of game
and so is everyone else.
