Arab League divided on action against Syria in their latest meeting

Arab League which is set to hold a new meeting to discuss Syria’s membership in the league on Wednesday is divided over the issue of suspending Syria from the organization altogether considering it’s aggression against domestic
protestors. Protests have been going on in Syria for the past 6 months as people have been enthusiastic in their vocal opposition against the rulers of the country. Syrian government has taken a very autocratic stance against the protestors and has continuously
tried to silence them through the use of force and coercion up till now to preserve its power against a popular movement of resistance throughout the Middle Eastern country.

The pressure is mounting on the countries in the Arab League to take a tougher stance against Syrian oppression but the organization itself is reluctant to take action one of its “own”. On Sunday the league had announced that it
will suspend Syrian membership from the Arab League but this announcement sparked vast attacks on different embassies in Damascus which prompted the Algerian foreign minister spokesman Amar Belani to state, “We have decided on a meeting of foreign ministers
of the Arab League on November 16 at Rabat (Morocco), on Syria”.

Algeria’s foreign minister added to the controversy by stating, “The League’s foreign ministers at a meeting in Cairo on Saturday voted 18-22 to suspend Syria from November 16 over its failure to comply with an agreement to end
its crackdown on protests, which the United Nations says has left at 3,500 people dead since mid-March.”

Arab League’s initial decision to suspend Syria had earned them praise from other international and regional organizations such as the U.N as the secretary general Ban Ki-Moon said that the vote in the Arab League was strong and
courageous in nature. However the Syrian state television reported, “The Syrian people are filling the squares of the nation and announce their rejection of the Arab League decision”. It still remains to be seen whether or not the vote of suspension against
Syria will hold sway on Wednesday or whether the Arab League will track back on its initial announcement.
