Hema Malini on evolution of “Bollywood”

Hema Malini, an Indian actress-cum-producer, has spoken of her surprise over how quickly Bollywood movies have changed, highlighting the significant technological changes that have evolved over the time in changing the entire looks
of Indian cinema.

Better known as the Bollywood dream girl, she started her acting career from Raj Kapoor’s “Sapno ka Saudagar” in 1963 but it was her block buster movie “Sholay” that gave her millions of fans.

After back-to-back hit movies, she decided to produce and direct a movie on her own. She worked on “Dil Aashna hai” as a debutant director starring Shah Rukh Khan and late Divya Bharti.

The movie had not lived up to the fans expectations leaving Hema realize that direction is a difficult job. Speaking on the role of technological in film direction, She said:

“Direction has undergone a dramatic change. Technological advancement has taken film direction to a newer level. And it is important to make full use of it in the right way,”

She added: “Many times I have seen, if something goes wrong, they say ‘it would be corrected in post-production’. This process of delaying it not only becomes expensive but also time-consuming.”

The 63-years-old is of the opinion that they used to work very hard in order to film a scene correctly, insisting that the old movies also had better quality. Hema revealed that the film-makers had never preferred technology during
her time and admitted that she doesn’t find that beauty on the silver screen anymore.

The fact that Indian movies are filled with vulgar dance numbers displeases the Padma Shri award winner. She bemoaned the dance steps and urged the entire Bollywood industry to frequently adapt to “Bharatanatyam”, a traditional
Indian dance, style of dance.

The dream girl went on to reiterate her desire to start a classical Indian dance show and insisted that the television producers should not forget the origins of the classical dance.

“I really miss classical dance in films, but I cannot have it. Even the producers would never make a film on classical dance.” Hema was quoted as saying

Hema revealed that survival in the Bollywood industry is quite difficult and it demands restless work days in and days out. The promising director advised the newcomers to work hard in order to succeed in the respective industry.
