Denmark earmarks additional US$ 2.8 million for Pakistan floods

Denmark on Tuesday earmarked additional 2.8 million US dollars in immediate humanitarian assistance for the flood survivors of the Southern Pakistan.

The recent assistance was announced by the Danish ambassador in Pakistan, Uffe Wolffhechel. The Danish envoy expressed serious concerns over the critical food insecurity situation in the flood hit areas of Sindh and Balochistan. Uffe said that his country
is concerned for the people of southern Pakistan who have been affected by recent monsoon rains and floods and will do its level best to help Pakistan rehabilitate these people.

The Danish Ambassador said that the successive floods in 2010 and 2011 have put several millions of Pakistanis in a very vulnerable situation adding that Denmark is committed to support Pakistan through its challenging time.

“Thousands of them were still struggling to overcome the financial, social and emotional loss occured from the 2010 floods, when the additional disaster happened and has further caused challenges for them,” said Uffe Wolffhechel.

A spell of heavy monsoon rains, which started in mid-August this year, has led to extensive flooding in Sindh and Balochistan province of Pakistan. According to United Nations report, approximately 5.8 million people have been affected by the rains and the
ongoing flooding. Around 1.8 million people have been displaced and are living in extremely difficult conditions.

Highlighting the alarming food shortage in the flood affected districts of Sindh and Balochistan, Uffe said that food shortage was becoming more critical day by day and urged the international community to respond immediately to the calls for aid by various
organisations.

“Denmark responded immediately to the floods this year by contributing to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA’s) relief operations and ECHO’s assessment, so that we could support the Pakistani authorities in mapping the community and geographical
needs as well as review the immediate and long term needs of the flood affected”, said Wolffhechel

After the recently announced 2.8 million aid package, the total volume of Danish assistance has reached 8.8 million this year.

The Government of Denmark has also contributed directly to NDMA’s assessment and relief operations as well as participated in the Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission.
