Why the Pakistani Premier League is just a waste of resources

All over the globe, the beautiful game primarily flourishes due to the presence of a proper National league set-up. While in countries like England, Italy, Spain and Germany it has become a multi-billion dollar industry, in Pakistan the top flight remains
nothing more than a waste of scarce PFF resources.

Makhdoom Faisel Salah Hayat calls it the ‘showpiece’ event in front of the public, but he as well as anyone knows that it’s only a gimmick to show that the PFF is doing something rather than just indulging in corruption.

The Pakistan Premier League, the highest echelon of football in the Islamic Republic, is one of the only top-tier championships that lasts only three months during the whole year.

Players who are usually plying their trade as employees of government departments are forced to play a gruelling total f 26 matches over the short course of the league.

Not only does this provoke unnecessary injuries and fatigue but it also prevents the footballers from truly filling their potential and becoming better as the years roll by.

However this does not sum up the problems the Premier League has, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. One of the biggest issues facing the sport in the country is the lack of decent salaries being handed out.

While most players are given jobs at their respective departments such as PIA or Army, the highest paid footballer on proper contract happens to be Muhammad Essa, who is arguably the most talented star to emerge from Pakistan.

However the striker is paid a paltry sum of 50,000 rupees per month, which is hardly a figure that could sustain a family in the current economic climate.

Even if the torrid pay structure is ignored, another major hurdle which prevents the Premier League from producing top quality talent is the lack of a proper youth-setup.

Teams have no restrictions on how many youngsters they should keep in their squad or whether they should maintain proper academies to sustain a steady line of starlets.

With the current scenario the Pakistani Premier League finds itself in, there should be no complaints over the disappointing results of the National team, whose backbone has always been formed by the top division.
