PPP turns to its allies as challenges multiply

With crisis after crisis falling on the embattled Pakistan People’s Party’s government simultaneously, the party leadership has decided to step up their contacts with the allies to deal with them. Chaudhry Shujahat Hussain is one of the first allies to assure
the government of his PML-Q’s complete support complete.

The decision to step up the contacts came after the news of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s serious considerations of quitting the assembly. Any push for early elections will compound the problems the PPP government is currently facing. Also, the Hussain
Haqqani sage involving the alleged memo to admiral Mike Mullen (r) is a new challenge in the list.

While the pressure is piling up on the PPP government to bring the Pakistani ambassador Hussain Haqqni in Pakistan to explain his position, the PML-N move on the domestic front also threatens the continuation of the PPP-led federal government.

The PPP leadership’s decision to turn to allies is being interpreted as a sign of its calculated strategy to avert a crisis that can spiral out of control and culminate with early elections. Thursday’s meeting that was chaired by the prime minister Yousuf
Raza Gillani was attended by several legislators including the party members and allies.

They were Religious Affairs Minister Syed Khursheed Shah; MNAs Syed Mumtaz Gilani, Sher Mohammad Baloch, Sardar Saleem Haider, Mohammad Saeed Khan Baloch, Ashraf Rana and Hayat Khan Tochi; and MPAs Rana Mohammad Ghous, Engineer Bilal Kharral, Nawabzada Ghazanfar
Ali Gul and Syed Latafat Hussain Bukhari, Raheela Baloch, Rasheed Akbar Khan, Mehreen Razak Bhutto, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Humayun Aziz Kurd, Noman Langriyal, Nawab Ghani Talpur.

Nawaz Sharif, on the other hand said that any decision pertaining to quitting the assemblies will be taken after deliberation.

“Although the time has come to force the government to step down, his party will take into consideration the interest of the country and the nation before deciding to quit the assemblies,” Nawaz Sharif asserted.

He also referred to the meeting he had recently had with Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who recently resigned from the basic membership of the PPP and the National Assembly, and said another meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 22.
