Football: Bahria University teach CL United a lesson they will not soon forget

The Barclays Premier League may have been returned in full swing after the international break, yet that was not the only piece of football action to take place on everyone’s two days off. Bahria University took on CL United at the Pasban Sports Complex
in a football match on Sunday.

Bahria University are set to go to Lahore, where they will participate in the Lahore University of Management Sciences Sports fest 2011 and the match against CL United was warm-up in what is set to be a grueling preparation for the team.

Kicking off at 12:45pm, the match began with the away side (Bahria) having a slight disadvantage as one of their players was still in transit. However, a quick adjustment in tactics and formation later the Bahria team was in complete control of the game.

Ahmed Mehdi, one of Bahria’s star players, partnered Hassan in attack, while Faizan “Jannu” Sameer Malik and Areeb Khan held the midfield together. Playing with three centre backs due to the shortage of players, former captain Musa Khan Afridi, Qasmi and
Talha made up the defence.

Bahria started the brightest and ended the first half with a 5-0 lead. Two goals from Hassan, two from the left-winger Ali Shahrose and a cheeky flick by Areeb Khan had the home side reeling as they went into the break.

Bilal had joined the Bahrian side by then, yet the numbers game was not going the away team’s way as the captain Faizan Sameer Malik and star striker, Ahmed Mehdi, abandoned their side and left Bahria with nine men to play the second half.

It seemed that was all the home side needed and they pressed from the whistle. They came close to scoring a number times and hit the post twice in the process, yet the breakthrough came when Areeb Khan was sidelined as he treated an ankle injury.

CL United had their goal and wanted to build on it but Bahria had other ideas as Musa Khan Afridi scored from a corner kick and later should amazing awareness and pace to leave the opposing defender for dead and slide the ball into Qasmi’s path who found
the back of an empty net.

Final score Bahria 7-1 CL United.
