Theater Valley and a well known French institute Alliance Française d’ Islamabad organized a play at Islamabad Club’s auditorium. This one act performance portrayed a famous story ‘The Lesson’ written by Engene Lonesco who was a notable Romanian and French
play and drama writer.

Since 1957 this master piece has became a permanent production of Paris Theater de la Huchette.

The lesson is a stroke of theater geniuses, who basically shows the hidden facts of human nature through their dark comedy.

With the help of genre literature, this absurdist fiction describes the agnostic and nihilistic topic which helps in unveiling the meaningless actions and events.

The play depicts a nonsensical and increasingly dangerous tutorial between a deranged professor and a dull pupil.

An eager pupil attends a lesson in the house of a well known professor, who tries to guide him through the fundamentals of arithmetic, Linguistics and philology.

As the absurd and nonsensical lesson progresses, the Professor grows angrier with the Pupil because he thinks that the pupil is ignoring and not paying attention towards the lesson.

Gradually the pupil becomes quite and meek, due to the awkward change in professor’s attitude. Her health begins to deteriorate, and what starts as a toothache develops into her entire body starts aching.

The plot of the play unfolds very impressively as pupil and the professor grapples through language and the understanding of arithmetic questions.

At the climax of the play, the Pupil is stabbed and murdered by the Professor, after a long bout of non sequiturs (which are frequently used in Ionesco’s plays). The play ends with the Maid greeting a new Pupil, taking the play full circle, back to the beginning.

The cast includes three characters, the professor, pupil and the maid.

The role of the professor was played by Tughral Turab Ali who grabbed the lime light with his out class delivery of dialogues. Rabia Pasha’s performance as a pupil was astonishing and the role of maid was played by the director of the play herself Fizza
Hassan.
