Is it wrong for Pakistan to want a hero for President?

Pakistan’s political history has been eventful to say the least, yet the turbulence it has experienced since its independence in 1947 meant that, more often than not, the ‘events’ were by and large ones we would not want to endure again.

There have been countless military coups from the likes of Ayub Khan, Zia-ul-Haq and the more recent one by Pervez Musharraf have brought timely disruptions to the political growth, maturity and stability of the country.

That is not to say that the governments preceding and following the coups were a cause for celebration either as Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was unceremoniously hanged, a number of Prime Ministers and Presidents have had allegations of corruption thrust upon their
laps and government officials are not perceived as the hard working, diligent, honest men and women they ought to be.

If one was to look at the presidents and prime ministers who have been appointed and elected over the past few years one finds lawyers, land lords and the occasional military general in the list. Yet, one has to ask the question here, how many of them are
heroes?

We are not talking Superman of course, but rather what pride, respect and honor had any of them brought to Pakistan? True, Mr. Bhutto gave the infamous speech at the United Nations were he tore up his papers and stormed out. It showed the world that Pakistan
was not a pawn and that it could stand up for itself despite international pressure, but even that was frowned upon by a fair few.

Now, staying objective let us look at one particular individual, Imran Khan. While he may not have the most distinguished record when it comes to politics, he seems to excel in every other field.

A graduate from Aitchison College Lahore, where many of the nation’s leaders come from, Imran Khan went on to one of the best universities in the world. After which he led the Pakistan cricket team to their first World Cup triumph in 1992, a feat that no
one else has topped.

He has opened the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Clinic as well as a university for the people of this country. In essence the man is a hero and though he may not ‘fit’ the profile of our previous leaders, maybe in this case, a change may end up being a good thing.
