Sherry Rehman – the new ambassador of Pakistan in USA

Shehrbano Rehman also known as Sherry Rehman is appointed as the Ambassador of Pakistan in United States of America. Sherry is the replacement of Husain Haqqani, who resigned just a day before as he was accused of memogate scandal.

A hand-out issued from Prime Minister’s office narrated, “Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has appointed Ms Sherry Rehman as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States of America." 

The appointment of Sherry came out as a big surprise for the whole political circle. Her appointment not only shocked the members of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) but many analysts were also surprised as she was never considered a
favourite candidate for this post.

She remained Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting of Pakistan from March 2008 until March 2009 while she resigned after having some conflicts with President Asif Ali Zardari over imposing restrictions on Pakistani Media. 

After her resignation from the Ministry, PPP’s leadership removed Sherry from the designation of Information secretary of party. Initially, she was not even invited on PPP’s high forum meetings but later on, she started receiving
invitations.

Before appointing former Minister, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, called out a personal meeting with her and briefed her about the appointment. Her selection as the Ambassador of Pakistan was made public, shortly after the meeting.

While talking to the media, Sherry expressed her views by saying that," I see it as a major challenge and hope to bridge some divides and, at the same time, be an equally strong advocate for Pakistan’s interests."

The Ambassador Ali Sarwar Naqvi, who leads the Centre for international Strategic Studies, shared his views and said, "She’ll be positively seen by the military because she doesn’t carry any baggage, unlike Mr Haqqani who had been
very critical of the military."  

The nation thinks that she would prove herself as a good choice for this post. Her background and history for neutralizing relationships indicates that she will face the challenges ahead successfully and will improve the country’s
image and relationship with US.

Though she is not familiar with the political environment, she is going to have at her new work place but the analysts believe that Sherry will be a positive factor in normalizing the harsh environment.
