Wali Khan wants UN action on Nato attack

The President of Awami National Party, Asfandyar Wali Khan has urged the United Nations to take notice of the unprovoked Nato attack on two Pakistan military posts on Saturday morning, stressing that the Nato forces had violated the UN charter.

Wali Khan, who is also the chairman of National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, called the raid an attack on the country’s sovereignty, and urged the United Nations to take notice of the incident and do needful in the shortest possible time
as it was an unambiguous violation of United Nations’ charter.

“Now, the UN should act in support of its charter as it always demands the member states implement the charter. And if the UN can’t implement its charter, it is regretful,” said the ANP chief while talking to the media at the Khyber-Pakhtunkhawa House Saturday.

Wali Khan, urged the government and other institutions to strongly condemn the unprovoked air attack by the Nato and ISAF helicopters so that such incidents did not happen in the future.

Responding to a question, the ANP chairman said his party had always condemned the violence against Pakistan.

“I summoned the Afghan ambassador when attacks took place in Dir, Bajaur and Chitral and lodged strong protest but there are limitations and all know about that confusion is prevailing over the domain of power,” said Wali Khan.

The pre-dawn Nato and ISAF on Pakistan troops on November 26, 2011 was the deadliest friendly fire incident since the start of the war against terror in Afghanistan, a decade ago. The incursion, which left 28 Pakistan troops dead and other 13 injured, prompted
the Pakistan government cut the Nato supply routes operating through its territory.

Besides banning Nato supply trucks from crossing into Afghanistan, the Defence
Coordination Committee of Pakistan also decided that US should vacate the Shamsi airbase within 15 days.

The Pakistan Foreign Minister, Hina Rabbani Khar spoke to her counterpart in US, Hillary Clinton early Sunday morning and informed her about DCC’s decisions.

Ms Khar stressed that such attacks are “in stark violation of Pakistani sovereignty and are “totally unacceptable”.

In the meanwhile, US has condoled about the loss of life and promised full probe into the deadly incident.
