Blackle is a search engine just like google in fact the website is powered by google itself. It is a Google Custom Search created by Heap Media. Heap Media is a company that aims to save energy by displaying black background instead of white
with gray font colour.
Blackle has saved a total number of 2,821,654.016 watt hours so far as claimed by the website. The watt hours are saved every time someone opens the web page. Blackle is based on a study which has experimented a number of LCD monitors and CRT screens and
the website claims that using the darker colours can save a significant amount of energy.
Efap Media came up with the concept through a blog post as it stated that an amount of 750 megawatt hours a year can be saved by google alone by utilizing the black background for the CRT screens. Google has accepted the idea as it has given its full support
to the search engine.
Blackle team believes that, “Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s colour settings and desktop graphics, as well as the colour and size of open application window; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than
a black (or dark) screen.”
Website homepage gives a number of watt hours saved so far which are still under a dispute especially for the LCD screens. Blackle team appeals to use the webpage for daily search operations as it will help save a lot of energy by the end of the day.
The website home page is http://www.blackle.com/ and it works the same way as google. There is still a debate as to whether the concept behind the black background and lighter font colours really saves any energy or
not but if it is true the idea worth millions and surely worth a click.
