Sleeping Beauty receives mixed reviews

Julia Leigh’s Sleeping Beauty, an Australian erotic drama film, received mixed reviews from the critics. It was released on May 12th, 2011 at Cannes Film Festival and on June 23rd, 2011 worldwide.

Directing a movie for the first time, Julia Leigh did a good job. It follows Lucy (starred by Emily Browning), a young university student possessed by a kind of radical passivity. Lucy is drawn into a mysterious hidden world of unspoken desires.

Rachael Blake, Even Leslie, Michael Dorman, Mirrah Foulkes and Henry Nixon will be joining Browning.

The flick’s script made the 2008 Black List of unproduced screenplays grabbing attention in Hollywood. In late 2009, Screen Australia approved the project for funding. In February 2010, Browning was announced as the lead character. Mia Wasikowska was originally
cast but dropped out in favour of playing the title role in the acclaimed version of Jane Eyre.

The 102 minutes long movie received mixed reviews by the top critics.

Review aggregator of the Rotten Tomatoes reported 49 percent of sixty-three critics gave positive reviews. The critics gave an average rating of 5.1 out of 10. However, only 27 percent of the site’s top critics gave positive ratings with average of 3.7 out
of 10.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called the flick, "Technically elegant with vehemence and control … Emily Browning gives a fierce and powerful performance … There is force and originality in Leigh’s work".

Kathleen Murphy of the MSN Movies stated, “Truth is, there’s really nothing, shameful or otherwise, to see in this pretentious and empty fairy tale.”

Chritsy Lemire of Associated Press declared, “Precisely staged but maddeningly obtuse, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ is an artful exercise in pointlessness.”

Julian Roman of the Movie Web however gave a positive review which was like this, “Sleeping Beauty’s frank subject matter and stark portrayal of a sexually blase college student is certainly interesting, but not nearly as much as expected.”

Peter Debruge, of Variety, described the film as frustrating, "more tiresome than anything," and having "a distinctly first-draft feel."

Overall, Sleeping Beauty is just a good way to pass your time.
