Facebook extending its operations in New York

Launched from his Harvard University dormitory room, Mark Zucherberg in his wildest dreams would not have thought, his brainchild “Facebook” will go on to dominate internet world in coming years and make him the youngest billionaire in the history.

Started off just as “Harvard Thing”, Zucherberg first extended it to other prominent universities in U.S and after an extraordinary response in next few months, leased a house in Palo Alto, California, that would serve as the company’s first office.

It’s a success story from there on.

Facebook changed the landscape of social networking and that is the reason, it spread globally like a fire.

Facebook’s office moved from the leased house to a three story massive building and its employees reached more than 3,000 in next few years.

Then about 15 months ago, Facebook decided to branch out from its Palo Alto, Calif., headquarters and expand with an engineering bureau in Seattle.

An office was also established in New York later, however keeping in mind that New York is the heart of U.S, the office was not that grand and consists just of hundred employees.

But now, Facebook has decided to expand its presence in New York City with an event trumpeting the coming launch of a new engineering office here designed to help promote the creation of technical jobs.

The center is scheduled to be opened by 2012 and will start accepting job applications immediately. It will be headed by Serkan Piantino, an engineering manager at Facebook who previously managed the teams behind Facebook’s News Feed and Timeline features.

Facebook’s CEO, Sheryl Sandberg in an exclusive event for the launch of new office in New York said

"We will hire as much talent as we can," Sandberg said, but she didn’t say whether Facebook would be looking for more office space in Manhattan. (She also said clearly at the start of the Q&A portion of the event that Facebook "will not be talking about
the IPO today.")

This move was praised by U.S senator Charles Schumer who was also there at the event. He added

“New York City is still second to the Bay Area when it comes to technology and related venture capital, noting that more work needs to be done if New York wants to become the tech capital of the country. This move by Facebook is a sign that New York is turning
the corner in this field”
