Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Twitter: Heavyweights of the online world go up against US piracy bills

The heavyweights of the online world Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Twitter joined forces to oppose the recent legislation in the United States Congress which intends to crack down the on the Internet piracy.

According to the new US online Piracy Bills, additional enforcement tools will be introduced to fight foreign rogue websites from counterfeiting and copyright infringements. However the internet giants believe that the proposed bills will expose law-abiding
internet users and it will hurt the track record of innovation greatly.

The heavyweights of the online world handed out a letter to the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, informing them about the negative impact of the legislation.

“Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding US Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites. We are concerned that these measures
pose a serious risk to our industry’s continued track record of innovation and job-creation, as well as to our nation’s cyber security.”

The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Lamar Smith, who is a republican from taxes, earlier stated that the piracy bill will not only help obstruct the flow of revenue to the rogue websites, it will also ensure that the profits from the American
innovations goes to the actual innovators.

“The bill prevents online thieves from selling counterfeit goods in the US, expands international protections for intellectual property, and protects American consumers from dangerous counterfeit products,” Smith said.

However Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Twitter who were later joined by AOL, eBay, LinkedIn, Mozilla and Zynga thinks otherwise and recommend in the letter that the Us needs to take some other measures to combat foreign rogues.

“We cannot support these bills as written and ask that you consider more targeted ways to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites dedicated to copyright infringement and trademark counterfeiting.”
