China announces that Coca Cola drinks were poisoned intentionally

Officials of northeast China articulated on Tuesday that the drinks manufactured by Coca Cola, which killed one child and harmed three others, were poisoned intentionally.

The boy died on Monday, November 28 after he drank a Pulpy Milky Yoghurt, which is manufactured by Minute Maid, a subsidiary of Coca Cola. The event raised nationwide concern over the quality of Coca Cola products but the allegations were removed after the
reports of local authorities.

The boy’s mother was also hospitalised in Changchun city due to the poisonous drink. Apart from that, another mother and daughter were admitted to the same hospital due to the poison, but were released after they recovered.

The reports were confirmed by Jilin government that said, “Following a technical analysis and a detective investigation, it has been preliminarily confirmed that the November 28 poisoning case involving Pulpy Milky is a case of deliberate poisoning.”

However, to ensure the quality of products supplied in region, the Chinese government pulled out stocks from various stores and Coca Cola manufacturing plants, but no other poisoned drinks were found.

The details of the poisoned drinks were not revealed by the officials but they asserted that the pulled stocks have been tested for harmful chemicals and the investigation has not completed.

Coca Cola told AFP that, “the police’s technical tests and investigations have preliminarily confirmed that this incident is a criminal case in Changchun.”

This “reaffirms that it is not related in any way to our product quality. We are 100 percent confident in the safety and quality of our products.”

Nevertheless, the poisoning cases forced authorities to take custody of thousands of Pulpy Milky Yoghurt, which were thoroughly examined for harmful chemicals. This led to a stop of selling of these products in numerous Chinese cities including Beijing and
Shanghai.

According to an official of Xinhua news agency, this is not the first case of deliberate poisoning in China as two people were reported dead. It said that two people were killed in 2009, after their soft drink ‘Sprite’ was contaminated with mercury.
