Equal rights be assured for differently able people; Chairman I-Lap urges on International Human Rights day

Rawalpindi, while celebrating the international Human Rights day with differently able children at a hospital in Rawalpindi the other day, Mr. Sajid Ishaq – the renowned human rights activist and chairman Interfaith League against
Poverty (I-Lap) – an independent Non Government Organization, urged that equal rights be assured for special people in Pakistan.

Mr. Ishaq, while distributing gifts among children on behalf of his NGO, said: “As a community, we need to shift our focus onto a person’s abilities and what people can do, and refrain from assumptions about what people can’t do”.
He further said, “People with a disability can only participate fully in community life if we learn to recognise and focus on a person’s strengths and abilities”.

Continuing with his comments, Mr. Ishaq lamented the current human rights violations in Pakistan and the world abroad. He was of the view that Pakistan, as a country and as a nation had a long way to go for eradicating menaces
of child labour, bonded labour, forced marriages, vani and Karo Kari (killing women in the name of honour). He also expressed his grief and discontent over the prolonged wars around the globe which had only caused innumerable human deaths and mass exodus.
To him, negotiations and dialogues were the only way forward to a sustained peace in the world.

Highlighting reasons behind gross human violations in the country, the chairman I-Lap said that low literacy rate caused by abject poverty had been adding to the vows of the masses in Pakistan. And perhaps that was the reason that
his organization had come forward with the resolve to combat all shapes of poverty (mental, physical and financial) with its full force.

At the end of his comments, Mr. Ishaq expressed his wishes to see Pakistan as a prosperous nation where rights of every human are protected and where peace among different faiths be prevailed. He ended his remarks by stating his
organization’s determination to always stand firm for the promotion of peace and human rights in Pakistan and beyond.
