Rumours dissipate as the president to return soon

One would expect that with the advent of winters it was a spell of frigid cold that gripped the capital, Islamabad. However, it was the rising political temperatures that chilled the environment. The unscheduled visit of President Asif Ali Zardari opened
the floodgates of speculations and rumours, triggering concerns if the country was ready to cope with the situation.

All the concerns pertained to the health of the president. Some of his implacable rivals even did not dismiss the possibility that he might never return to the country owing to the politically threatening ‘memogate’ crisis involving the former ambassador
to the United States, Hussain Haqqani.

As reports swirled (which were construed as nothing but rumours) about the possible coup, the federal government finally kicked into action, coming ever more forcefully to dismiss all these reports.

Nonetheless, things seem quite in control now as rumours have started dissipating. The president will return soon as Pakistan Peoples Party Information Secretary and former Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira said.

Kaira’s assertion holds weight as he is considered one of the most responsible ministers around. Being the party information secretary, he was contacted by the president on phone, and was informed that the latter would return soon.

He said that the day doctors allowed the president, he would resume his responsibilities. Kaira said that the president told him that the PPP leaders with its workers would face every kind of situation, and would handle the national issues as well.

He said that even though Mian Shahbaz Sharif went abroad after every couple of months for treatment, never had the PPP discussed his visits, adding that it was unfortunate that some people were searching conspiracies in the illness of the president instead
of praying for him.

Hamid Mir also wrote a column on Monday in Jang, stating that he believed president would return to address not only the joint session of Parliament, but also a rally in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh on the fourth anniversary of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s
assassination.
