PTDC runs into financial crisis: unable to pay salaries to the employs

Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation, the Government body which overlooks the development of tourism in the country is now following in the footsteps of the other “endangered” institutions of the country like the PIA and the Railways and the financial
liabilities have now surged to the extent that the once thriving institution is not being able to pay salaries to its contractual and daily wages staff.

Talking to the press, the employs revealed that the organization has not paid them their due salaries for the last seven months which has increased their vows to an unprecedented level.

Sources within the organization say that it needs a bail-out package of around Rs250 million to snap out of its present dilapidated condition and needs thorough overhaul of the currently running fiascos which have not been able to earn a single dime for
the organization. With rampant corruption and nepotism in almost all public sector organizations, PTDC has succumbed to its own inefficiencies where merit is regularly bypassed for the “preferable” ones.

PTDC spokesman Mukhtar Ali told this scribe that the federal government is going to release funds to PTDC after which employees would be paid their salaries. “We are facing financial crunch but the government is fully aware of the situation and taking steps
after which the issue of salaries would be resolved on permanent basis,” he said.

PTDC Managing Director Mir Shahjahan Khetran, while talking to the scribe, lamented the post 9/11 scenario which ruined the already feeble condition of the tourism in the country, further pushing the industry in doldrums. The Managing Director effectively
evaded the inefficiencies of the present setup which has plunged the organization to its current lows.

“Our sources of income have declined after 9/11 incidents but still we are trying to face the situation in an amicable way,” he said.

PTDC is currently running 38 motels at important tourist destinations in Pakistan including scenic places like Batagram, Changla Par, Chilas, Chitral, Dir, Kohistan, Swat, Malakand, Dalbaddin, Khuzdar, Chakwal, Karachi, Ghizar, Gilgit, Skardu, Ganche and
Abbottabad but rampant corruption and inefficiencies have rendered the organization redundant and useless.

The organization is also reviewing a proposal to privatize many of its important motels in order to increase the inflow of resources. In addition to this, PTDC has also leased out its motel and restaurant facilities to private parties/provincial tourism
organizations, located at Islamabad (Daman-e-Koh), Malakand, Keenjhar Lake, Khuzdar and Sharkol (KKH) and Jaltarang Restaurant along Rawal Lake, Islamabad.
