DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp

DuckTales the Movie is a 1990 animated flick based on the hit animated television adventure series DuckTales. It was directed by Bob Hathcock and was released on 3rd August, 1990 by Walt Disney Pictures.

DuckTales was in turn based on supporting characters from earlier Donald Duck films and comic books as Scrooge McDuck (voiced by Alan Young) and Donald’s mischievous nephews Huey, Duey and Louie (all three voiced by Russi Taylor).

The 74 minutes adventure chronicles the attempts of the four star ducks along with their pilot, Launch Pad, to find a legendary lamp and its genie in an Egypt’s pyramid. However, they face resilience from the evil magician Merlock
and his dim-witted thief counterpart, Dijon (voiced by Rochard Libertini).

Animator Larry Ruppel shared his experience during the film’s production, "I was the sole American working at the Paris studio during this production, the other creative artists hailing mostly from France, Denmark, Australia and
Italy. I’d like to add that this little movie ended up being quite important because of the many notable animation professionals who got their start on this project.”

The film earned $18 million dollars domestically and made back its budget. It was also hoping to face competition from other large-scale summer family releases like Problem Child and caused all planned DuckTales films to be shelved
as well.

Some critics considered the film to be a betrayal of Carl’s Barks’ Uncle Scrooge comic books on which DuckTales was based. However, the animated flick received generally favourable reviews. On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes,
the film got a ‘Certified Fresh’ score of 83 percent.

Caryn James of the New York Times stated, “It will be hard for parents to resist their children’s attraction to Duck Tales, and everyone could do much worse.”

Chris Hicks of the Desert News, Salt lake City praised the animated movie further by saying, “I was pleasantly surprised at how clever and funny the film is.”

The movie is a must watch for not only kids but for parents aswell. One of the most successful animated movies, ‘Aladdin’ which was released two years later shares many elements with this film.
