Now, war on our terms: Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar confirming the blocking of $700 million aid to Pakistan said the US will be responsible if allies and Pakistan fail in the war on terror.

“The war against terrorism cannot be won by anyone alone,” the minister stated while briefing the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, which met under the chair of Senator Raza Rabbani.

The meeting discussed the current tension between Pakistan and US/NATO, memogate issue, agreements between Pakistan and US and allies forces attack on Pakistani security check-posts.

The foreign minister and sectaries of defence and foreign affairs briefed the parliamentary panel about the memogate issue and Pakistan’s agreements with US, NATO and ISAF.

Hina told the body that Islamabad was in touch with other countries for release of US aid after it is frozen $700 million aid. “The US decision will leave negative impacts on the war against terror,” she added.

The minister continued that Pakistan would move forward without the US aid. “Nothing to worry about because financially we are not depending on single country,” she maintained.

Khar told the committee that Pakistan’s relations with US were on hold currently and the government would move forward according to the directions set by the parliament.

Later talking to the media, she said that Pakistan has two written agreements with US/NATO on assistance to coalition forces in Afghanistan including NATO supply line.

The minister said that earlier the Defence Committee of Cabinet had clearly recommended a review of the relations with the US, ISAF and NATO and the parliamentary bodies also endorsed the decision.

“We will fight the war on our own terms,” she claimed. She maintained that she also provided the details of the written agreements with the US to the committee.

Briefing the media about committee’s proceedings, Senator Raza Rabbani said that Pakistan has currently nine agreements with US (written) however; no agreement was made during the tenure of present government.

Rabbani said that ministries of defence and foreign affairs had no comprehensive record of oral agreements. “The committee has sought more details of all accords and understandings in its next meeting on December 24,” he added.

He said that parliamentary panel also sought the copies of two written agreements between Pakistan and US/NATO (regarding war on terror) to prepare its recommendations for amending those accords according to requirements of present situation.

He also slammed US for blocking aid to Pakistan and urged US Senate to review its decision.

The committee also directed both ministries to submit more details regarding controversial memogate issue. The committee’s chairman said that recommendations of envoys’ conference were also presented in the meeting.

“The committee will draft it own recommendations regarding Pak-US relations that will be sent to the Parliament,” he added.
