Prime Minister is ready to fight

It seems that the current civilian government, like just about every civilian set up, may fall in the coming days without completing its term mandated by the constitution. However, it will not be happened without any wrestle.

Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, who was never before famous as a blazing public speaker, expressed his stance rather well while speaking in the upper house of the parliament. In his view, anti-democratic powers were behind the memogate issue, saying
that parliament should not accept military coup at any cost.

It was an inspiring address at a time when the government is at its most susceptible situation. The civilian governments in the past did not show much resistance against the military interventions. However, this will not be practised once again.

The PPP will not make similar mistakes if we critically review the premier’s address particularly in this context.

However, the words alone will not be enough powerful to fend off a possible army coup, no matter how power they are. The premier’s address was a strong caution, which stated the government’s position is insecure.

It is unclear the Gilani’s speech put a light on his counted days or warned the military to stay away from the executive corridors. Everyone knows that the PPP will not accept it without a brawl.

Conversely, the PPP will not win the battle unless everyone will join it against a martial law or any unconstitutional action. No matter how much PML-N would like to see PPP out of power, it will have to stand behind the government to protect the democratic
system.

PML-N Chief, Nawaz Sharif has been the leading opponent of the military intervention. It will be a great chance for him to take advantage of this meddling, but he should not desolate civilian setup in the best interests of the country.

The fate of the democracy may rest on the shoulders of the apex court than the political parties. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and other judges of the apex court must have remembered the attitude meted out to them by the former dictatorial ruler,
Pervez Musharraf.

The court while taking any decision should not forget that that it is the final protector of the Constitution.

Political forces, back in 1977, chose a short military takeover over the PPP regime and thus, the nation faced the historical decade of Zia-ul-Haq, from 1977 to 1988. We have a time to avert any similar mistake, if we want to protect this country from another
martial-law.
