ANP Chief Asfandyar Wali demands resignations from dual nationals

Awami National Party (ANP)’s Chief, Asfandyar Wali Khan, welcomed decision of barring dual nationals from contesting the elections, demanding the members of parliament with dual citizenship to resign voluntarily.

“How a parliamentarian can be loyal to Pakistan having his interests in another country also,” Asfandyar said while talking to media in Parliament House Tuesday.

He further said that the people have questions over the loyalty of those persons, who had taken oath of allegiance for other countries as well, and having business and other affairs over there.

“Law should be implemented on the present members of parliament otherwise it will be a joke with the Constitution,” Asfandyar added.

He was sure that there were some parliamentarians with dual citizenship sitting in the present assemblies. He suggested them to resign voluntarily from the sacred public offices.

The ANP’s chief went on to say that persons with dual nationality have no right to represent the masses. “The government should initiate a legal process to ouster the people sitting in the present assemblies with dual citizenship.

He also seconded the Pakistan Muslim League –Nawaz’s (PML-N) bill regarding giving Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) powers to take action by itself against the dual nationals for contesting polls after submitting wrong statements.

To a question, the ANP’s chief said that all rumours of political change in the country are faded awat with return of President Asif Ali Zardari. “President is healthy and fit and he is here to perform his political and constitutional duties,” he added.

General Elections will be held in 2013 according to the schedule, he said adding that those who were demanding elections should get ready for the Senate polls first.

Asfandyar opined that memogate issue was sub-judice before the court and it would be cleared soon. “System cannot be derailed through a piece of paper,” he added.

While reply to another query, the Pakhtoon leader was of the view that foreign policy of the country was being altered now. Blocking the NATO’s supply line and vacation of Shamsi Air Base are strong indication of our policy shift, he maintained.
