The Unfortunate Situation of our Society

Looking at the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf public meeting on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, and how it came to an end, it was certainly a disappointment to be saying that those people were Pakistan and out brothers in the country.

As soon as Imran Khan left, people everywhere started stacking the chairs and took them home without any remorse or regret, which is something that should make us think, are we in the current situation the country is in today due to the politicians or ourselves?

There is no blame on the PTI or Imran Khan for the way people behaved since this is not a political analysis, but just to say, the management could have done a much, much better job at controlling the so-called “supporters”, who looked as if they were just
forced to attend and got their times worth in the end.

Well that is a totally different story.

Our society today is without a doubt, going through a tough time and all we do is blame whoever is at the top without ever thinking what is going down at the bottom level, where if you closely look, is by far worse.

Today, we blame all our worries and problems on President Asif Ali Zardari, who in this situation is certainly not to blame since anybody better than him is hanged, expelled from the country or assassinated.

Incapable army generals have even tried to rule this country for countless years with force and breaking and re-constructing the supreme law of the land, but to no use or accountability for their actions.

The current situation we are in is due to the actions of ourselves and nobody else.

Ask yourself a simple question, we are driving down the road, what is the situation there? Do people act in a loving and caring manner or rather are they maniacs driving in full speed trying to take down anything in their paths?

I think we can all answer that without second thought.

There is a famous saying that you can tell how the people of a certain society are by looking at the condition of their roads. This saying has a deep meaning and just by looking at how people react to different situations while driving can tell a foreigner
who they most probably are in other areas of life.

We as a society have lost all major seven virtues which made us human beings different in comparison to animals. The major two being temperance and patience.

We want everything for free and from the hands of others without realising in any way that someone else could be in need. The rich snatch from the hands of the poor and the poor snatch from wherever they find the opportunity.

Our streets are filled with people who are perfectly capable of working but want to beg to make a living as it is easier.

Instead of working towards building a better society, we want to take the shortcuts in every way possible.

As yourself another simple question which might be tough to answer. Have you ever in your life, acquired something that was the right of another for personal gain and benefit?

I think that too, we all can answer in the positive.

Sharing a personal experience, I know of a clerk that lives near my house and is a government employee. He might be making Rs. 20,000 at the most and has been allotted a small residential flat in the government employees housing but looking at his valuables,
it is a whole different story.

That clerk owns two cars, which he possibly could not have owned if he saved money his whole life, his children study in the top schools of Lahore where the fees combined are more than his monthly income and many more indecencies which I have left out purposely.

He is one out of millions of such clerks around the country that indulge in looting the country and that too is in one department. Think about our police, where in other countries, they are your friends but in Pakistan, we are afraid whenever they approach
since they might just have us kidnapped, ask for heavy bribes or God knows what.

We, the people of Pakistan make this country. All the politicians, government employees, officers, private sector employees, police and army men, they all come from within us. They do not come from outside and take these positions. We are them and they are
us.

Until we turn ourselves around, nothing will improve in this country. We must have patience in our every day dealings, impartiality in public affairs, humility in front of our God and his creations, diligence in our working in striving to earn every single
penny and kindness for our family, friends and fellow countrymen.

I would like to quote the 35th President of the United States of America, who was certainly one of the greatest leaders this world has seen. His quote is something we should work on as a society instead of blaming the politicians for all troubles.

"Ask not what your country can do for you–ask what you can do for your country."

–John F. Kennedy, in his Inaugural Address.
