Badlands: A romantic-crime story

Badlands is a true story based on the murders of two people, Charles Starkweather and Caril-Ann Fugate. The story involves a young man and woman who are in love with each other but their relationship is unacceptable to the girl’s father.

The plot has been written and directed by Terrence Malick and the main cast includes Martin Sheen as ‘Kit’, Sissy Spacek as ‘Holly’, Warren Oates as ‘Father’, Ramon Bieri as ‘Cato’, Alan Vint as ‘Deputy’, Gary Littlejohn as ‘Sheriff’, Howard Ragsdale as
‘Boss’ and Dona Baldwin as ‘Maid’.

Kit Carruthers, a young garbage collector and his girlfriend Holly Sargis from Fort Dupree, South Dakota, are on the run after killing Holly’s father who disagreed with their relationship.

On their way towards the Badlands of Montana they leave a trail of dispassionate and seemingly random murders.

A very intriguing narrative without judgements, and lacking the usually sensational approach of this genre.

Very good acting and directing, and beautiful photography. The script was based upon the true story of the Charles Starkweather and Caril-Ann Fugate murders in 1958.

Badlands is narrated by Holly (Spacek), a teenage girl living in a dead-end South Dakota town. One day she meets Kit (Sheen), a rebellious young greaser who charms her and takes her as his accomplice on a cross-country killing spree.

Holly’s narration, describing her adventures with Kit with romantic clichés, is juxtaposed with the grim reality of Kit’s sociopathic appetite for grisly violence. The two are eventually arrested; Kit is executed for his crimes, while Holly receives probation.
