Listen… I am Prime Minister of Pakistan

It seems that the country once again headed towards a stressful crisis. Pakistan’s most horrible covert was out in the open; the army and ISI (Inter Services Intelligence) have been out of control by the civilian government.

Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani lost his temper while speaking in the National Assembly, hitting hard at the military establishment. He attempted to assert his authority as the chief executive of the country.

His timely and brave speech needs to be meticulously commended on all fronts. He was of the opinion that many things were required to be said by him, as anxiety between the civilian setup and security forces looks to simmer.

The premier not only expressed his concerns over conspiracies being hatched against the civilian government, he raised questions about the credibility of the military over the Osama Bin Laden’s catastrophe that raised queries by the world about Pakistan’s
honesty in countering militancy.

Gilani, in direct reference, lashed out at the security establishment, saying “state within a state will not be acceptable.

The difference between the military establishment and the civilian set up seemed to have reached a point of quarrel, as usually soft-spoken premier directly targeted the security forces.

“Conspirators are plotting to bring down the elected government but the people have the right to decide whether they want democracy or dictatorship,” he added. He gave these remarks in reply to a statement of the Defence Ministry, submitted in the Supreme
Court, that it didn’t exercise operational control over the army and ISI.

He categorically told the house that all institutions of the country are answerable to parliament and this is how things go in a completely democratic system. Reminding the military establishment, the premier stated that it was the incumbent government that
put its weight behind the security forces after the May 02 incident and the Mohmand Agency incursion.

He believes that the situation is getting a much uncooked deal. Possibly, his one of especially telling remark was when he circuitously referred to calls being made regarding the alleged issuance of visas to the US citizens by Hussain Haqqani, the former
ambassador to America, asking that how Osama bin Laden spent six years in an army garrison.

In all, it seems that the time has approached when one party will be have to take the reins of the country; whether the military establishment or the civilian government.
