The future looks bright for Pakistani football

For once things in Pakistani football look bright. The decent performance in the SAFF Cup along with the promise of talented youngsters in the upcoming future has renewed optimism amongst the faithful that the game may finally be on the rise in the country.

Since the start of the game, the Pakistan National team has been considered a major underachiever in terms of their potential and the talent that is present throughout the region.

However the lackluster facilities, mediocre coaches and the mismanagement of the PFF has seen the Green-Kickers become the laughing stock of the Asian game. However since the U-16 team won the SAFF Cup and the appointment of Zavisa Milosavljevic, things
have beginning to shape up for the country.

The Serbian insured that the Green Shirts weren’t humiliated in the regional tournament and to the contrary, they played very well given their lack of preparation. The defence in particular was quite note worthy as they conceded only one goal and looked
remarkably solid.

Zavisa is now on the look for more talent to bolster the ranks and hopes for a decent performance in the U-22 AFC Qualifiers. On the youth level, we are steadily churning out excellent talents but due to the lack of a proper infrastructure, it remains to
be seen how far they can go on their own.

Regardless, they could form the base for the National Team in the future but immediately steps must be taken to improve the league and make it more competitive so that players can develop further.

Foreign players have also been a surprise bonus for Pakistan and the likes of Adnan Ahmed, Atif Bashir and Zeeshan Rehman have all starred for the team in recent memory. However more players plying their trade in the foreign leagues are opting to represent
Pakistan and that can only bode well for the future.

If the PFF seriously takes into mind player development and selflessly works to promote the game in the country, there is genuine belief that Pakistan can rise to the highest echelons of the Asian football starting from 2012.
